Assurance

Definition:

The act of assuring; of presented as a statement or indication that inspires confidence; a guarantee or pledge: gave her assurance that the plan would succeed. Also, freedom from doubt; certainty: set sail in the assurance of favorable winds. Some synonyms can help in our understanding, such as self-confidence or as a believer, confidence in God and His word.

Brief Explanation:

Dr. Richard Walters in his book Off Center, Off Course (available from www.highgroundpress.org) provides an excellent explanation of those who never find the peace Jesus promised in the knowledge of their salvation. This can come due to a wrong belief about salvation (by grace we are saved, not of works) and God’s ability to sustain us until we go to be with the Lord.  If one has asked Christ into their lives with sincerity, they can be assured of his presence with them and his ability to sustain them until they go to heaven. Prayer to assist the honest doubter is most helpful, as is an understanding of the scriptures presented here.

The Word of God:

John 3:36

“He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”

Job 19:25-27

“And as for me, I know that my Redeemer lives, And at the last He will take His stand on the earth. Even after my skin is destroyed, Yet from my flesh I shall see God; Whom I myself shall behold, And whom my eyes shall see and not another. My heart faints within me.”

Romans 8:38, 39

“For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Philippians 4:6,7

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, shall guard you hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
