HEALING

HEALING

Definition:

Healing means to restore to health or soundness; cure. It is also defined as to set right; repair: healed the rift between us. Another view is to restore (a person) to spiritual wholeness.

Brief Explanation:

In I Corinthians 12: 9, Paul states that there are “gifts of healing,” plural. Thus, there are many ways the Lord heals, all of which are to be active in the Body of Christ. Counseling is called the talking cure, in that, it is believed that through talking out a problem, relief, solutions, healing of the problem can come. This is often true, but of course, the talk must be in light of biblical solutions and common sense. As Christian Counselors, to believe the Lord with a client for healing, to pray for such, to expect the Lord to heal through a variety of means is appropriate. However, we must remember that character does not need healing, but maturation, and many conditions, such as depression, anxiety, and certainly thought disorders take time, and often a multidisciplinary approach, that is, medicine, counseling, and prayer.

The Word of God:

James 5:13-16

“Is anyone among you suffering?  Then he must pray.  Is anyone cheerful?  He is to sing praises.  Is anyone among you sick?  The he must call for the elders of the church and they are to pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; and the prayer offered in faith will restore the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up, and if he has committed sins, they will be forgiven him.  Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be healed.  The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much.”

Isaiah 40:29, 31

“He gives strength to the weary, and to him, who lacks might, he increases power. Yet those who wait for the Lord will gain new strength; they will mount up with wings like eagles, they will run and not get tired, they will walk and not become weary.”

Jeremiah 30:17

“For I will restore you to health and I will heal you of your wounds,” declares the Lord, “because they have called out an outcast, saying: it is Zion; no one cares for her.”

Psalm 103:1

“Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless His holy name.  Who pardons all your iniquities, who heals all your diseases.”

Psalm 147:3

“He heals the broken hearted and bind up their wounds.”

1 Peter 2:24

“And He himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds we are healed.”
