HUMILITY

HUMILITY

Definition:

The quality or condition of being humble.

Brief Explanation:

A humble person is not merely self-effacing. He or she is a person with an honest appraisal of themselves in terms of their strengths and weaknesses. They have learned to accept themselves as they are, without accepting sin or a weakness that may be overcome.  Jesus was the meekest of all, having a quiet strength of character; he was also humble, in that he rightly knew who he was, and who he wasn’t, and what he was called to do. A humble person is one who can be admired. Being humble, a Christian counselor never oversells or undersells his or her skills, and always acknowledges that it is by the grace of God and the skills learned that we are able to do what we do. As Paul stated so aptly, it is in him we live and move and have our very existence; we should always be grateful.

The Word of God:

Philippians 2:5-8

“Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death on the cross.”

2 Chronicles 7:14

“And My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”

Proverbs 15:33

“The fear of the Lord is instruction for wisdom, and before honor comes humility.”

Matthew 18:4

“Whoever then humbles himself as this child, he is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.”

James 4:6

“God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”

1 Peter 5:6

“Therefore, humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time.”
