REVENGE
Definition:
Revenge is defined as the inflicting of punishment in return for injury or insult. It also can mean to seek or take vengeance for oneself or another person; avenge.
Brief Explanation:
Ah, sweet revenge! Perhaps, many have such thoughts, but since the Lord certainly knew we could not be trusted with the responsibility of what is just recompense, he left revenge for his purview. Revenge is a theme you often hear in counseling and one even recommended by some in cases of child abuse. Justice is needed in many cases, but the Lord forbids us to take revenge, as it sets in motion a cycle that sadly never ceases. Helping the client to deal with the anger, hurt or pain that causes them to want to take revenge is our key to helping the client avoid the additional pain that would be caused if revenge, no matter how sweet it might feel, were acted on.
The Word of God:
Romans 12:19
Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay,” says the Lord.
Matthew 5:38-41
“You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.’ But I say to you, do not resist an evil person; but whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also. If anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, let him have your coat also. Whoever forces you to go one mile, go with him two.”
Matthew 6:14
“For if you forgive others for their transgressions, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.”
